TMC nominates former Goa CM Luizinho Faleiro to Rajya Sabha

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday nominated the former Chief Minister of Goa luizinho falero to Rajya Sabha.

“We are extremely pleased to nominate @luizinhofaleiro to the Upper House of Parliament. We are confident that his efforts to serve the nation will be widely appreciated by our people!” the party tweeted from its official handle.

The election for the Rajya Sabha seat is to be held on November 29. The seat fell vacant after TMC MP Arpita Ghosh resigned on September 15.

Mr. Faleiro is likely to file his nomination next week. The former Congress leader joined the TMC on September 29 and was later appointed the party’s vice-president.

The nomination of the Goa leader comes at a time when TMC is trying to establish its foothold in the western coastal state.

TMC President and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Goa in October and organized several public events. Assembly elections in Goa will be held in 2022 and TMC wants to present itself as an alternative to BJP. TMC sources said Mr Faleiro is likely to contest the assembly elections. TMC has denied any pre-poll alliance in the state.

TMC appointed Krishnanagar Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra as Goa in-charge. This is the first major organizational responsibility for Ms. Moitra.
