Toyota Yaris collides with Latin NCAP; score 1 star

The Toyota Yaris manufactured in Brazil and Thailand was crash tested and the result is valid for the hatchback and sedan versions of the car.

Latin NCAP, the New Car Assessment Program for Latin America and the Caribbean, today released crash test ratings for the Toyota Yaris. Produced in Brazil and Thailand, the Toyota Yaris with double airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) earned a star under the latest Latin NCAP protocol. Yaris secured 41.43 per cent in adult occupant safety and 63.85 per cent in child occupant safety. In the frontal impact test (unit tested in 2019) the model showed unstable structure and unstable footwell field performance. The side effect showed a door opening during testing. A door opening in the Latin NCAP side impact test, which has the same configuration as regulation UN 95, means that the car must have failed the UN 95 test.

The Yaris secured 61.63 percent in the Pedestrian Safety and Vulnerable Road User test and 41.86 percent in the Safety Assistance test. For the Latin American market the Yaris does not offer side body and side head protection airbags as standard.

Yaris secured 41.43 percent in adult safety

The Yaris Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) did not detect the front passenger. According to Latin NCAP, “Opening the door in a side impact requires immediate action by Toyota as it poses a serious risk of ejection in case of a side impact.”

The result is valid for the hatchback and sedan versions of the Yaris. This model offers optional equipment that can potentially contribute to improved performance and become standard across all model ranges. Latin NCAP said Toyota declined to test optional equipment to show its performance.

Latin NCAP Secretary General Alejandro Fures said, “It is concerning that a decision made by Toyota Mexico is the main reason for this result, but also responsible for the decision not to offer it as a standard key protection device right now.” As a result of this decision, key safety devices such as side body and side curtain airbags are not available to all Latin Americans. Basic vehicle protection, which is considered in mature markets, is a right that Latin American consumers can claim without paying extra They should do it”.
