Trade setup for August 18, 2022: Things to know before the opening bell of the stock market

Trade setup for Thursday: Following positive global cues, the Indian stock market closed higher for the seventh consecutive session. NSE Nifty closed 119 points higher at 17,944 while BSE Sensex closed 417 points higher at 60,260 level. The Nifty Bank index ended 222 points higher at 39,461. Mid-cap and small-cap indices edged lower than Nifty 50 index but the forward decline ratio was positive at 1.57:1.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones was down 0.50 per cent, the tech heavy Nasdaq 1.25 per cent, the S&P 500 down 0.72 per cent, while the Small Cap 2000 dropped 1.60 per cent. European markets declined after preliminary GDP, unemployment and UK inflation numbers for the euro area. UK consumer prices rose 10.1 per cent in the 12 months to July, up more than 9.8 per cent and a new 40-year high. Asian stocks were mostly up on Wednesday as regional markets looked to strong economic cues from the US and China as drivers of growth.

“Markets are down less than 4 per cent from their lifetime highs. Nifty continues its sustained growth and is currently outperforming global markets. Although there are no signs of reversal, the current uptrend is ripe. Uptrend However, 18,114 can act as a resistance while 17,719 is a support, said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities.

Vaishali Parekh, Vice President, Technical Research, Prabhudas Lilladher said, “Support for Nifty Bank Index is placed at 39,050 to 39,100 level, while it is facing resistance at 39,900 to 39,950 level.” The analyst further said that the broad range of the index can be considered between 39,050 to 39,950 levels.

Major call open interest additions were seen at the 18100 and 18200 strikes which added 27162 and 44502 contracts respectively. Call unwinding was witnessed at 17800 strike which shed 127690 contracts.

Major put open interest additions were seen in the 17900 and 17800 strikes, adding 127939,72329 contracts respectively. The strike of 17700 saw put unwinding in which 3237 contracts were forfeited.

As per the data shown by nseindia.com on August 17th at 3.30 pm, the major total call open interest was seen at 39600, 39800 and 40000 strike with total open interest of 57856, 59272 and 118939 contracts respectively. Major call open interest pairs were seen at 39600 and 40000 strike which included 28891 and 26435 contracts respectively. Call unwinding was witnessed at 39200, 39300 and 39400 strikes, which shed 25694, 29236 and 17399 contracts respectively.

Major put open interest additions were seen at 39400, 39300 and 39000 strikes, with 35344, 37203 and 35373 contracts added respectively. The strikes from 39000 to 40000 saw no major put unwinding.

Ban on NSE F&O on 18 August 2022

National Stock Exchange (NSE) has added Balrampur Chini, Delta Corp and Tata Chemicals stocks under its F&O sanctions list for the trading date of 18 August 2022. Securities in the restriction period under the F&O segment include those companies in which the security has crossed 95 per cent. of market-wide position limits.

US Bond Yield

The US 10-year bond yield declined 0.26 per cent to 2.888 while the US 30-year bond yield declined 0.07 per cent to 3.144.
