Transfer news: Everton sign Burnley winger Dwight McNilla

Everton on Thursday signed Burnley winger Dwight McNeill in a deal worth £20 million ($24 million).

McNeil agreed to a five-year contract with Everton as he made an early return to the Premier League following relegation to Burnley last season.

The 22-year-old scored seven goals in 137 Premier League appearances for the Clarets.

McNeil, who began his career at Manchester United before joining Burnley Academy, is looking forward to working for Everton manager Frank Lampard.

“It is an amazing feeling to sign. When I heard of Everton’s interest I wanted to do it immediately because of how good the club and the team are,” McNeil said.

“I think playing under a manager like Frank Lampard will help me get my figures. That’s what I want to do and improve my game.

“Talking to the manager about what they want next, it really got me excited and appealed to me. I wanted to be a part of it.”

Lampard was keen to improve Everton’s squad after saving him from relegation after coming in to replace Rafael Benítez in the second half of the season.

McNeil became Everton’s third close-season signing along with former Burnley teammates James Tarkowski and Ruben Vinagre, who is on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon.

“I’ve been a big fan of Dwight for a while. He has huge talent and is exactly the type of player we want to bring into the team to help us improve,” Lampard said.
