Treat children with sensitivity without prejudice: Karnataka High Court to teachers, staff

Taking cognizance of the case of two missing girls, the Karnataka High Court has asked the teachers and staff of the school to treat the children without discrimination and with sensitivity.

The court has also asked parents to behave in a civilized manner when children are around. Justice B. A high court bench headed by Veerappa and Justice KS Hemalekha on Monday issued a stern warning in this regard.

The bench has also taken an affidavit in this regard from the school headmistress and other staff members and closed the matter.

The bench had taken up before the court a habeas corpus petition filed by PV Sister Clara, the headmistress of St Joseph’s Convent in Bengaluru, in connection with the disappearance of two girl students.

The bench said that the students should be treated with humanity. Teachers and parents should strive towards shaping the careers of the students.

The court also directed to conduct counseling of the missing students. Educational institutions should not hurt the sentiments of children in any way. The bench said that they should also ensure that they do not utter any words that differentiate between the students.

The court also directed the management of the educational institution to take care of the children like their own children. The bench further said that parents should behave in a civilized manner in front of their children.

The missing students had apologized for their act in court. He also assured that in future he will not indulge in any such act and will focus on studies to become good citizens in the society.

The High Court had also appreciated the efforts of Inspector PM Kiran and staff of Pulakeshinagar Police Station in locating the missing children.

Headmistress Clara gave an undertaking that St. Joseph’s Convent as an educational institution has a 127-year history. He has given priority to protecting the dignity and safety of students and this will be continued.

Instructions will be given to take appropriate action to prevent the employees from doing wrong things and to bring them on the right track. He also said that the staff and teachers will be instructed not to speak loudly to the children and not to hurt their sentiments.

The headmistress Clara had also said in an affidavit to the court that a workshop would be organized from time to time for teachers and other staff members to enhance the ability of psychologists to deal with children.
