The participants of the meeting expressed concern over the women’s movement and demanded strict restrictions in this regard. The ban on women visiting picnic sites was later announced by Maulana Rashid of JUI-F, calling it a “joint declaration” of the jirga.
He said that all the participants have approved the complete ban on travel of women to tourist places with or without husband.
“We want to promote tourism in our areas as it is important for the socio-economic development of the region. We are against women visiting such areas only because it was against our customs and traditions. Banned it,” he declared, adding such activities in the name of tourism cannot be allowed.
He further stressed that if the government/district administration fails to take any action in this regard by Sunday, the jirga will enforce the ban only.
There was no word from the district administration, nor was there any indication whether the JUI-F-backed jirga decision was supported by other political parties, or if it was indeed a “representative” of the tribal council.
The party has influence in the tribal district, but social activists said the announcement lacked any legal and constitutional backing.
