Former Sonmura MLA Subal Bhowmik had switched from BJP to TMC in July last year.

The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday removed its Tripura state president Subal Bhowmick, amid speculation that he may return to the BJP. Bhowmik, a former Sonmura MLA, had switched from the BJP to the TMC in July last year.

“This press release is to announce that Subal Bhowmik is being relieved from the post of State President of Tripura Pradesh Trinamool Congress with immediate effect,” the TMC said. All the members of State Committee, State Youth Committee, State Women Committee, State ST Cell will continue to hold their posts.

Bhowmik has been away from party programs for the past few days. The TMC announced that former West Bengal minister Rajiv Banerjee, party’s in-charge for Tripura and Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev will oversee the party’s functioning till the appointment of a new state president.

Bhowmik, who was appointed TMC’s state president in April, is likely to join the BJP on August 28 during the visit of its president JP Nadda to Tripura. He was the state vice-president of the BJP and was instrumental in bringing down the 25 years of Left rule. In the 2018 assembly elections.

However, he quit the BJP in July last year amid differences with the then Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. Since its massive electoral victory in West Bengal last year, the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has been trying to expand to several states. However, it has not been able to make much headway in Tripura despite vigorous campaigning in the assembly by-elections and civic polls.
