Tripura polls: ECI orders probe into political clash, asks state CEO to seek report from DGP

Hours after the announcement of the dates for the assembly elections on Wednesday, a political tussle broke out in Tripura. Now Election commission of India The Chief Electoral Officer of the state has been asked to obtain a report from the DGP regarding the incident and it is to be submitted by 3 pm on Friday (January 20).

“The Election Commission of India has ordered an inquiry into the incident of political violence in Jirania sub-division of West Tripura district reported on 18 January. The Election Commission of India has asked the Chief Electoral Officer, Tripura to obtain a report from the DGP Tripura. through Chief Secretary, Tripura, and submit it by 3 PM on January 20,” the Tripura CEO said in a series of tweets.

The ECI had announced on Wednesday that polling in the northeastern state would be held on February 16 while the counting of votes would take place on March 2.

Hours after the election was announced, the Congress alleged that a group of “BJP-backed goons” attacked 15 party workers and office-bearers, including AICC general secretary Ajay Kumar, during a bike rally in Tripura’s Majlishpur constituency, in which they were injured. Police, however, said the attacks were carried out by unidentified miscreants in West Tripura district, and “10 party workers were injured”.

Announcing the elections, Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar had said that the ECI is committed and duty-bound to conduct free, fair, violence-free and inducement-free elections.

“There is no place for violence in a democracy, we are working towards violence-free elections. There are only a few states where there is violence before and after elections. The commission has spoken to the local authorities and all efforts will be made to ensure peaceful elections.”

On Thursday, a three-member delegation led by CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury met the Election Commission and submitted a memorandum, asking the poll body to take emergency measures to conduct free and fair elections in Tripura, especially in the recent past. In the days of violence.

Tipra Motha activist killed

Another incident, the murder of a Tipra Motha worker, was also reported from the polling state six hours after the dates were announced. Tipra Motha Dal has accused BJP of carrying out this act.

Police said a Tipra Motha leader of Surma assembly constituency was returning home after a day’s work when unidentified miscreants attacked him. First his car was ransacked, after which he was dragged out of the vehicle and fatally assaulted on the head.

Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishor Manikya Debbarma appealed for peace for the polls and questioned the Election Commission’s claims of “zero violence”.
