New Delhi: Balurghat MP sukant majumdari West Bengal BJP president was appointed on Monday replacing Dilip Ghosh, who has been promoted as the party’s national vice-president.
Majumdar’s appointment assumes significance as it comes as the party is pitted against CM Mamata Banerjee, who is contesting the assembly bypoll from Bhawanipur, and amid internal squabbles in the wake of party MP Babul Supriyo joining the TMC. Too.
In another significant development, BJP chief JP Nadda appointed Babyrani Maurya as the national vice-president. She was the governor of Uttarakhand and recently resigned. Both Ghosh and Maurya are OBCs and their appointment is seen as part of the BJP’s continued reach to the community, which has the largest share of voters in the country.
Surprisingly, senior leaders like Prakash Javadekar and Ravi Shankar Prasad, who were recently sacked as cabinet ministers, have not joined the organization since then, contrary to the ongoing speculation.
Ghosh’s term was to end next year and he had to resign prematurely in the wake of reports of internal differences within the state unit. Supriyo was also a dagger with Ghosh and his resignation from the party was also seen as a consequence of the same. Supriyo had clearly said that he did not want to continue in the party under Ghosh’s leadership.
