Addressing the media here, he accused the Congress government of “killing” the livelihood of small truck drivers by dismantling truck unions.

“We will revitalize truck unions to ensure that small truck drivers get their due. He said that coordination committees would be set up to ensure the safety of the industry along with members of truck unions, trade representatives as well as the interests of the government as well as the truck drivers.

He also said that a Transporter Welfare Board will be set up with a corpus of ₹25 crore to ensure extension of humanitarian assistance to the members in case of exceptional circumstances like the recent COVID pandemic.

Among other measures aimed at ensuring the welfare of the trucking industry, he announced that in case of issue of tenders, priority would be given to the local truck union.

He promised that a one-time settlement scheme would also be launched to help truckers clear the outstanding tax.

He said the SAD-BSP alliance is aware of the problems of school vans which have become impractical due to heavy taxation.

“We will reduce the road tax for school vans as compared to commercial vehicles,” he said.

He also promised to bring a liberal policy to replace all auto-rickshaws with e-rickshaws.

“We will bring in a mechanism to ensure easy sale of existing auto-rickshaws, followed by provision of new e-rickshaws at nominal interest rate to the owners. No registration fee will be charged from e-rickshaws,” he said.
