TS-TET – Background and Reasoning
The implementation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 requires recruitment of a large number of teachers across the country in a time bound manner. Despite the enormity of the work, it is desirable to ensure that the quality requirement for recruitment of teachers is not diluted at any cost. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the persons recruited as teachers have the requisite aptitude and ability to meet the challenges of teaching in the elementary level classes (I to VIII).
The justification for including TET as the minimum qualification to be eligible for appointment as a teacher is as follows.
I. It will bring national standards and benchmarks of teacher quality in the recruitment process;
ii. This will motivate the teacher education institutions and the students of these institutions to further improve their performance standards;
iii. This will give a positive signal to all the stakeholders that the government lays special emphasis on teacher quality.
