Twin plans to boost pharma infra

New Delhi World Pharmacy is geared up to promote infrastructure with common facilities and technology up-gradation for small pharmaceutical enterprises to meet international regulatory standards.

The pharmaceutical department has asked states and union territories to ensure wider participation in a new scheme to strengthen the industry. The scheme has two main components, Assistance to Pharmaceutical Industry for Common Facilities (API-CF) and Pharmaceutical Technology Upgradation Assistance Scheme (PTUAS). Applications will be invited for both the schemes soon.

“The Department of Pharmaceuticals has recently launched a scheme for Strengthening Pharmaceutical Industry (SPI) with an objective to strengthen the existing infrastructure of pharmaceutical industries to make India a global leader in the pharma sector. The Department of Pharmaceuticals is now planning to issue detailed guidelines of the SPI scheme and is expected to issue a notification inviting applications for both the sub-schemes of SPI soon,” the department secretary, S Aparna, wrote to the principal secretaries, In a letter seen by Mint.

API-CF sub-scheme, with an outlay of 178 crore over a five-year plan period, to strengthen the sustainable growth potential of the existing pharma cluster, by creating common facilities with a focus on research and development laboratories, testing laboratories, effluent treatment plants, logistics and training centres.

PTUAS Sub-Scheme with an outlay of 300 crore, Pharma proposes support for SMEs, either through credit-linked capital subsidy of 10% per annum subject to a maximum of 5% per annum of interest subvention (6% in case of units owned and managed by SC/STs). From.

Experts said that though India is the largest provider of generic drugs globally, it is still dependent on other countries for medical equipment.

Association of Indian Medical Devices Industry Forum Coordinator Rajeev Nath welcomed the development. “India is still 70-80% dependent on other countries and the announcement of the long-awaited medical device policy will help address 12-15% of the disability faced by India in the effort to manufacture medical devices,” he said. .
