Twitter on Thursday announced the introduction of the ALT badge and improved image detail for all users globally. Images with text description will get a badge with ‘alt’ written on it and on clicking on the badge the description will pop up. According to Twitter’s previously announced changes in March 2022 ledge,

Here are the steps to add an ALT image description to an image in a Tweet:

  • After uploading an image to a Tweet, select Add description below the image.
  • Enter a description of the image in the text box, under the 1000-word limit.
  • Click Save, and an ALT badge will appear on the corner of the image.
  • After tweeting, any user who views your tweet will see an ALT badge with the image, and a description of your image when clicked on it.

Twitter first introduced image descriptions in 2016, but it can be difficult to figure out where and how to add them. The social media giant didn’t have a dedicated accessibility team until the end of 2020, with workers willing to volunteer their time to work on accessibility issues.
