Mali is struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency that first erupted in the north in 2012 and has claimed thousands of military and civilian lives since then.
Despite the presence of thousands of French and UN troops, the conflict engulfed central Mali and spread to neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.
France, a former colonial power in Mali, has said it will reduce its troops in the Sahel.
It also plans to abandon Kidal, Tesalit and Timbuktu for its troops to refocus on Gao and Maneka, close to the troubled “three-borders” area near Burkina Faso and Niger.
