The incident took place around 6 am when a joint team of Greyhounds Police of Telangana and District Special Party Police was on a search operation in the Puttapadu forest along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border.

Police said the Maoists opened fire on the police party which was conducting the search, following which an encounter started from both the sides. After the encounter, during the search operation at the encounter site, the police found bodies of two Naxals.

One of the slain Maoists has been identified as Madakam Yerayah alias Rajesh, commander of the banned outfit Charla Local Organizing Squad (LOS). A self-loading rifle and another pistol have been recovered from the spot.
