Kanpur: Two more accused of 1984 Sikh The riots have been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT)sit) from the city on Tuesday night. Both the accused were involved in attacking the Namdev Gurdwara.
With the recent arrest, the SIT probing the Sikh riots has so far arrested 13 accused in the Nirala Nagar triple murder case.
Earlier on June 15, four accused in the Nirala Nagar massacre Yogendra SinghThe SIT had arrested Vijay Narayan Singh, Shafiullah and Abdul Rehman.
The biggest catch- Raghavendra Kushwaha, nephew of Shivnath Singh Kushwaha, who was a minister of state in the Congress government at that time, is yet to be arrested.
Similarly, on the night of June 22, the SIT raided three different places in Kidwainagar and arrested five more people. Two accused have been arrested by raiding in Naubasta. The SIT team raided the area to nab the 6 accused, however succeeded in arresting Siddh Gopal Gupta alias Babbu, a resident of K Block Kidwai Nagar and Jitendra Kumar Tiwari, a resident of A Block. Yashoda Nagar for his alleged involvement in the incident.
“Both the accused were involved in the mob attacking the Namdev Gurdwara. In this incident, two including the servant were killed. A total of 127 Sikhs were killed in the riots that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her security personnel. About 40 cases of murder, dacoity and dacoity were registered, out of which 29 were closed by the police after giving a final report.
The SIT was constituted on May 27, 2019, after the apex court issued notice to the state government in August 2017 on a petition seeking a SIT probe into the riots. The four-member SIT is headed by retired UP DGP Atul. The other members are retired District Judge Subhash Chandra Agrawal and retired Additional Director (Prosecution). Yogeshwar Krishna Srivastava, DIG Balendu Bhushan Singh is its member-secretary.
