Road permits are issued for automobiles based on the use of the vehicle and the area of their operation. This article will help you understand the different types of vehicle permits issued in India.
With regard to permits, automobiles are mainly divided into two categories – passenger vehicles and goods vehicles.
Permits for passenger vehicles:
1. School Buses or Institutions:
The vehicles to which this permit is issued are painted golden yellow and are exempt from road tax. These vehicles are owned by educational institutions.
2. All India Tourist Permit (AITP):
The All India Tourist Permit is issued to white luxury buses, with a blue ribbon 5 cm wide, which is located at the center of the body of the bus. In addition, the word “tourist” must be on both sides of the vehicle.
3. Rent-a-Cab Permit:
To obtain a Rent-a-Cab permit, the applicant has to comply with the following conditions –
- Applicant should have a 24/7 working telephone.
- A legal parking space must be available.
- Sufficient experience in transportation business.
- Owners of at least 50 air-conditioned vehicles.
- Passenger tax is paid in the state where the vehicle operates.
4. Temporary Permit:
A temporary permit allows a vehicle to operate outside Delhi for a restricted period. This permit is granted in the following circumstances –
- For religious events or affairs.
- vehicles to travel for business purposes from time to time.
- Vehicles traveling to apply for renewal of permit.
5. Stage Carriage Permit:
State Transport Corporations announce from time to time the grant of Carriage Permits based on the requirement of buses for different routes in the city or district. These permits are then given to either state-owned buses or other private operators that regularly ferry passengers within these city routes.
6. Environmentally Friendly Service:
This permit is issued to a vehicle which has three wheels and is powered by a battery. Further, the seating capacity including the driver should not exceed 11.
7. Burst Burst Service:
This permit is issued to vehicles plying on a certain route and having a seating capacity of more than 10 people including the driver.
8. Maxi Cab Permit:
Vehicles that carry passengers on a fixed route, and have a maximum seating capacity of 12- 13 (varies by state) including the driver, are issued this permit.
9. Auto Rickshaw and Taxi Permit:
These permits are issued to three wheelers and four wheelers carrying passengers. The fare is calculated by the fare meter mounted on the vehicle.
10. Chartered Buses Permit:
A chartered bus is a permit holder can operate under a contract with his customer to a certain destination within the city or outside the city. For this an agreement should be made between the customers and the operators and the list of passengers should also be available with the driver of the bus. The permit holder cannot choose passengers other than those mentioned in the list.
Permit for goods vehicles:
1. Goods Carrier Permit:
Goods Carrier Permit is mandatory for vehicles carrying goods. This permit has been given under section 79 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. It allows a vehicle to operate within a state.
2. Counter Signature of Goods Carrier Permit:
This permit is issued by one state, but may be valid in different states through endorsement by the respective state or regional transport authority. In Delhi, countersignatures are denied for vehicles that have a gross weight of more than 7500 kg and do not run on clean fuel.
3. National Permit:

National permits are issued to goods vehicles to be able to operate outside the home state. This permit is issued for four consecutive states including the home state. The age of the vehicle should not exceed 12 years for obtaining a national permit, the age should not exceed 15 years for a multi-axle vehicle.
