What happened in Udaipur?

Two men slit the throat of a tailor in Udaipur on Monday, saying in a video post on social media they were taking revenge for insults to Islam and creating communal tension in the Rajasthan city.

In a video clip posted online, one of the alleged attackers announced that they beheaded the man and then threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would get his knife.

Indirectly, the attackers referred to Nupur Sharma, a BJP leader suspended from the party over a remark on Prophet Mohammad.

The tailor was recently arrested by the local police over certain comments made by him on social media.

In another video, the alleged attacker admitted that he “beheaded” the tailor and threatened the prime minister to light “this fire”. Tension escalated as the video went viral on social media. Shopkeepers downed shutters in local markets.

The shopkeepers stopped the police from taking the body, saying they would allow the removal of the body only after arresting the killers and giving Rs 50 lakh and a government job to the victim’s family.
