UEFA Europa League: Manchester United ousted by Sevilla, Sporting Juventus down, Roma beat Feyenoord

Manchester United were stuck at Seville in the Europa League on Thursday, while Juventus completed a fine evening for the club by stopping Sporting and advancing to the semi-finals.

In the quarter-final second leg, United were eliminated 5–2, losing 3–0 at Sevilla.

Juventus drew 1–1 with Sporting in Lisbon and went 2–1 on aggregate, while Bayer Leverkusen won 4–1 in Belgium to oust Union Saint-Gillois 5–2.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma beat Feyenoord 4-2 after extra time to take a 4-2 lead.

United, who led by two goals with six minutes remaining in the first leg before conceding a pair of late own goals, completed the collapse in Spain.

It was a disastrous night for goalkeeper David de Gea as the six-time competition winners left United in the lurch.

After eight minutes De Gea completed a pass to an isolated Harry Maguire, the scorer of one of his goals in the first leg. This time, ambushed by three opponents, he gave the ball away and Youssef An-Nesri accepted the gift.

Sevilla were in possession and could have scored again, but centre-back Loic Bade carried the ball over his shoulder and looped the ball over De Gea in the 47th minute.

De Gea charged out in the 81st minute but slipped the dropping ball. It fell to An-Nesri, who volleyed into an empty net to complete the win.

“It is clear that when we make mistakes, it is very difficult to win football games. We have to do better. It is a demand,” said United coach Erik ten Haag.

Juventus received potentially good news on the evening when Italy’s highest sports court quashed a 15-point Serie A points deduction for illegal transfer activity, but said the matter should be re-examined.

In Lisbon, Juventus made a quick start as Adrien Rabiot’s spin scored after Sporting failed to clear a ninth-minute corner.

The French midfielder fouled Manuel Ugarte in the penalty area and Marcus Edwards converted the penalty in the 20th minute.

The home team struggled against the Juventus defense and Riccardo Esgio and Sebastien Coates missed Sporting’s best chances in the final minutes.

Juventus next face Sevilla and coach Massimiliano Allegri said he thought the writing was on the wall for United.

“I expected Sevilla to be honest. They are a difficult team. They have won many Europa Leagues, so they definitely have an advantage,” the Juventus coach said.

In Brussels, the Union Saint-Gilloise could not claim a second German scalp.

In the first leg at Leverkusen, Union Saint-Gillois managed a draw as they went on to eliminate Union Berlin in the round of 16.

On Thursday, their hopes of a repeat began to fade after 90 seconds as Moussa Diaby made some poor defending and pounced on goalkeeper Anthony Morris.

Micheal Bakker scored the second goal after 38 minutes.

Morris then played the ball straight to Jérémy Frimpong, who fired the ball straight to the Luxembourg international after 60 minutes.

Kasper Terro replied for the Union but Adam Halozek restored the three-goal advantage.

“It’s great to be in the semi-finals, but once you’re there you want more,” said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.

After the first hour in Rome, Leonardo Spinazzola leveled the tie for the home team with a deflected shot.

Paixão flicked Feyenoord level on the night and ahead on aggregate. But in the final seconds of regular time, Paulo Dybala scored for Roma to send the tie into extra time.

Stéphane El Shaarawy struck from close range to put Roma ahead 11 minutes into extra time, and Lorenzo Pellegrini scored from the rebound three minutes into the second period.

Europa Conference League

In the Europa Conference League, Fiorentina blew a three-goal first round advantage over Lech Poznan, losing 3–2 at home before scoring twice in the last 12 minutes, but progressed 6–4 on aggregate.

Gent took the lead against West Ham at the London Stadium when Hugo Cuypers put them ahead on aggregate after 20 minutes.

But Michael Antonio scored twice, Lucas Paqueta converted a penalty and Declan Rice also scored to seal a comfortable 4–1 win for West Ham and a 5–2 aggregate score.
