UGC directs higher educational institutions to appoint compliance officers for foreign students – Times of India

New Delhi: University Grants Commission ,UGC) has written to all ‘Higher Educational Institutions’ (HEIs) to appoint a Compliance Officer who will coordinate with them Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
In view of the large influx of foreign students coming to India for education, non-availability of a nominee to be contacted by the Foreigner Regional Registration Offices (FRROs) / Foreigners Registration Offices (FROs) in educational institutions while processing service applications, Unnecessary delays, hardships and inadvertent violation of visa norms by foreigners is causing undue harassment of foreign students.
“In view of this, we have asked the Compliance Officers to coordinate with the FRRO/FRO to ascertain the facts with respect to foreign students during the grant of various services like visa registration, visa extension, exit permit etc. to all higher educational institutions. With their attendance, academic performance and other academic records,” UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar told ANI.
UGC has also asked he is To make this information accessible to all colleges and institutes affiliated to universities. Earlier, the UGC had only written to the HEI to establish a office for international affairs,
“Many higher education institutions have already set up this office. A staff member from this office may be designated as the compliance officer to coordinate with the FRRO/FRO,” the UGC chairman said.
The UGC had earlier clarified that foreign students who seek admission through foreign Ministry ,foreign Ministry) University Grants Commission (UGC) accredited and authorized online programs will not require a passport as a proof of their identity.
