UGC issues guidelines to offer flexible learning styles for differently abled students

University Grants Commission (UGC) Draft guidelines on pedagogical aspects for teaching differently-abled and students with certain specific learning disabilities (SLDs) have been prepared. The commission said that its objective is to provide guidelines for credit based courses to meet the appropriate physical, psychological, social and specific needs of students with disabilities in higher education.

“An inclusive pedagogy characterized by the use of multiple modes of delivery, with flexibility in the selection of subjects and courses, addressing the multiple learning styles and learning needs of students with disabilities and specific learning disabilities (SLDs) should be promoted at all levels. of education,” the UGC said.

It aims to provide flexibility in the selection of core, elective and skill-based courses as well as provide guidelines for course transaction in an accessible manner and format so that students with disabilities can learn according to their needs and abilities. “Introducing recent technology and pedagogy to increase access to students with disabilities in higher education” education To provide guidelines for evaluation of students with diverse learning needs in institutions and higher educational institutions,” the UGC said.

The stakeholders have been asked by the Commission to send their feedback and suggestions by October 25, 2022. The comments and suggestions are to be sent through the University Activity Monitoring Portal (UAMP) of the UGC at uamp.ugc.ac.in. The guidelines have been made keeping in mind the important recommendations of the National Policy on Education (NEP) 2020 towards teaching of Persons with Disabilities and SLDs. The draft guidelines can be accessed on the UGC website.

The Commission also reiterated that NEP 2020 emphasizes equity and inclusion as the cornerstone of all educational decisions to ensure that all students thrive in the education system. The UGC further said that the guidelines reflect the imperative to redefine the curriculum in keeping with liberalization and globalization in education. The UGC is of the view that it will only allow students to go to different educational institutions with the facility of credit transfer irrespective of any diversity including students with disabilities.
