UK adds Russian President Putin’s ex-wife, alleged girlfriend to sanctions list – Times of India

LONDON: The UK government on Friday added more names to its list of financial sanctions for the Russian president Vladimir PutinIn an ongoing backlash, including his ex-wife and a retired gymnast allegedly in a relationship with him conflict with Ukraine,
UK Foreign Secretary Lizzo truss said the latest tranche of sanctions is aimed at hitting the “wallets” of Putin’s family and friends, whom he rewards with money in return for state status and their unwavering loyalty. The UK Foreign Office reported that official records include some properties attributed to President Putin: a small flat in St Petersburg, two Soviet-era cars from the 1950s, a trailer and a small garage.
“Indeed, Putin relies on his network of family, childhood friends and select elites to benefit from his rule and support his lifestyle in return. His reward is an influence on the affairs of the Russian state that goes far beyond his formal positions,” the Foreign Office said.
The former First Lady of the Russian Federation, Lyudmila Ocheretnaya, has been on the sanctions list for benefiting from preferential business relationships with state-owned entities since her divorce from Putin in 2014.
Alina Kabaeva, a retired Olympic gymnast, is also on the sanctions list. The Foreign Office said she has risen to become chair of the board of National Media Group, reportedly the largest private Russian media company, and is accused of having “close personal ties with Putin”.
Anna Zatseplina, Grandmother of the also Approved Alina Kabaeva and an ally of Gennady Timchenko – a longtime Putin ally – sanctioned by the UK in February 2022. Others include Putin’s first cousin, Russian businessman and close friend, who are reportedly “part of the cabal, which pays Putin his money and power, and in return supports his war machine.” .
The Foreign Office said Friday’s sanctions isolate family members and financiers within Putin’s inner circle, “weakening” pressure on the Russian president as he continues “his senseless invasion of Ukraine”.
Since the invasion, the UK has claimed to have sanctioned, or designated, more than 1,000 individuals and 100 entities, including oligarchs, with total global assets exceeding GBP 117 billion.
The sanctions cover an asset freeze that prevents any UK citizen, or any business in the UK, from dealing with any money or economic resources that are owned, held or controlled by the nominee. A travel restriction also applies, meaning the nominee must be refused leave to enter or stay in the UK.
