The man’s leg was attached to the back of his hand after being injured during a sports game.

A man’s life may have taken an unfortunate turn but it ultimately saved him. Ibrahim Abdulrafe, who is 22 years old, woke up from surgery to find that his leg had fused backwards after injuring it during a sports game. This injury led doctors to discover a more serious diagnosis, which was bone cancer.

In 2015, Abdulrauf was playing soccer with his brother when he fell from a rough tackle. Although he felt pain afterwards, he assumed that his body would recover overnight and went to bed. Unfortunately, his condition did not improve. Abdulrafe recalled and told the New York Post, “When I woke up the next morning, I fell to the ground. My leg was in electric pain and I couldn’t put any weight on it at all.”

The boy, who was moaning in pain, sat down on the stairs and crawled to his mother’s side. It took him some time to understand the extent of his suffering. She recalled that she shouted at him because she thought he was making excuses to skip school. Abdulrauf was admitted to a hospital in Birmingham, England, where he was diagnosed with a bone infection. He remained in the medical facility for six weeks, receiving antibiotics to treat the infection, before returning home for three weeks. However, he showed no signs of improvement during this time.

Abdulraouf’s condition did not improve and instead, he experienced an increase in pain and noticed a large lump in his leg. The initial assumption was that he had a cyst or an abscess. He went back to the doctor, who referred him to the Royal Orthopedic Hospital in Birmingham. After going there, it was found that he had bone cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, primary bone cancers are rare, accounting for less than 1 percent of all cancers.

Abdulrauf received chemotherapy treatment for six months. Thereafter, the doctors opted to perform rotationplasty, a rare surgical procedure used to treat bone tumors located near the knee. Had the operation not been performed, Abdulrauf’s cancer was likely to have spread.

After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, Abdulrafe’s treatment was successful and he began his rehabilitation. He was given exercises to do every day at home to get used to his prosthesis, and he had to undergo years of rehabilitation before he was finally able to walk again. Following his successful rehabilitation, Abdulrauf is now able to participate in sports and dance and take care of himself without assistance.
