Britain’s parliament on Wednesday shut down its TikTok account after lawmakers expressed concerns over the ownership of the social media app by Chinese parent company ByteDance.
“Based on (Member of Parliament) feedback, we are closing the pilot UK Parliament TikTok account ahead of our plan,” a parliament spokesman said.
“The account was a pilot initiative, while we tested the platform as a way to reach a younger audience with relevant content about Parliament,” he said, “but now the account has been closed.”
The objections were led by a group of lawmakers admitted to speaking out against alleged human rights abuses by Beijing.
Former Tory leader Ian Duncan Smith, one of the approvers, welcomed the decision.
“We need to talk to people about not using TikTok,” he said.
