UK teenager jumps into freezing reservoir, dies after losing rock-paper-scissors game

A happy ending celebration went horribly wrong after a 16-year-old boy drowned in a reservoir in the UK after losing a bet at a Rock Paper Scissors game. According to a report in YorkshireLive, a teenage boy named Sam Haycock was celebrating the end of term with his friends at Ulle Reservoir, south of Rotherham, on the afternoon of May 28, 2021. While playing Rock Paper Scissors, Sam lost a bet and jumped into the reservoir, resulting in his death. According to Rotherham Council’s countryside and ecology manager Kevin Burke, the water in the reservoir was between 26 and 30 feet at the deepest points.

He further said that the first few inches of water will feel warm but once one gets inside it, there is a huge drop in temperature. Senior coroner Nicola Mundi revealed that none of the boys celebrating at the reservoir were skilled swimmers. However, they were provoking each other to jump into the water. When the boys decided to play a game of Rock Paper Scissors, Sam had to jump after losing the game.

Craig Pennington, an adult at the crash site, told Yorkshire Live: “I could hear the sound of young boys laughing and joking.” He further recalled hearing a call for help from one of the teenagers, but didn’t realize the urgency until he reached the edge of the bridge. Reportedly, a friend of Sam’s also tried to save him by jumping into the reservoir, but to no avail.

Dude couldn’t even swim and was rescued by Craig and another man, Kona Lee Qing, after hanging him from a bridge. An inquiry at Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard that there were also attempts to save Sam by using a throw line. Later, 999 emergency calls were made, following which firefighters reached the spot and tried to locate Sam. However, Sam could not be saved and his body was later fished out of the reservoir. Reportedly, Sam Haycock was a popular teenager from Rotherham and was recently diagnosed with autism and other complex medical problems, due to which he could not swim.
