UK train passenger praised for refusing her first class seat to older woman

A train passenger traveling from London to Aberdeen after a two-week long journey abroad has found widespread support online after she refused to give up her seat for an elderly woman in the 7-hour-long ride. The woman in her early 30s took to Reddit and posted the popular thread AITA describing her plight. She revealed that she had booked a first class seat for her trip with the knowledge that it would guarantee her privacy and ample space to work.

Take a look at his post titled “AITA for an elderly person not to move from my booked seat”.

The seat assigned to the woman was one of the ‘priority seats’ of the carriage – usually located at the ends of the coach. They are specially designed for people who cannot stand for long periods of time, for example, the disabled and the elderly. The 32-year-old clarified in his post that he did not know he had an assigned seat priority.

Elaborating further on the incident, the woman revealed that soon after boarding the train, an elderly woman of about 60 years of age “quite rudely” asked her to move out of the seat so that she could sit. She wrote in her post: “I told her I’ve booked a seat and she’ll have to talk to a member of staff to find it.” The elderly woman then told that there were no more seats available in the first class and the rest of the train. The 32-year-old passenger again reiterated that she would not move from her seat.

Later, a train guard came to the two to try to resolve the situation. The conversation revealed that the elderly woman had booked only a ‘return ticket’ and had no reservation. The guard asked the 32-year-old passenger if she would consider moving but she again declined.

Reddit users came out in support of the woman who shared the post, saying she has enough reasons to stand her ground. While several posters asked the train company to give them a seat, others pointed out that she didn’t have to make herself seriously uncomfortable because of someone else. One user said, ‘The train company is wrong here. He sold handicapped seats as the most expensive seats on the train. Then they tried to take the person who bought those seats to standard. In my honest opinion those seats should not be sold unless the occupant is handicapped. He is on the train operator. It’s not up to you.”

One user said, “If they offered to refund my ticket price I would go ahead. But no incentive? No.”

Sharing his experience, one person said, “Not familiar with UK trains but I have seen handicap seats specially marked when buying sports tickets.”
