Ukraine’s Roman Yaremchuk was in tears after Benfica supporters were given a standing ovation during the Primary Liga clash against Vitoria SC on Sunday. Initially, the Ukrainian striker was not in the playing XI but came in as a substitute in the 62nd minute and was also given the captain’s armband. Benfica fans applauded her for her support for her home country invaded by Russia. Benfica won the match at the Estadio da Luz by a score of 3–0, with Darwin Nez scoring a brace. Meanwhile, Goncalo Ramos also scored a goal during the victory.

When entering the football pitch, Yeremchuk was handed the captain’s armband by defender Jan Vertonghen as a show of solidarity.
Yaremchuk, who looked emotional, also praised the entire stadium.

Ukraine has received support from several football nations in Europe and England has announced a boycott of all its international matches against Russia.

England’s decision comes after similar announcements by Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic, which are all future or potential opponents of Russia in FIFA World Cup qualifying.
Meanwhile, FIFA has also said that Russia will be barred from hosting the matches and must play under the banner of the “Football Federation of Russia” without the national flag or its anthem.
