Ukraine will play a friendly with German club Borussia Mönchengladbach on May 11, the country’s football association announced on Friday in practice ahead of the 2022 World Cup play-off against Scotland. Stability with Scotland was rearranged at the request of Ukraine from 24 March to 1 June following the Russian invasion.

“The Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) has entered into an agreement with Borussia Monchengladbach to organize a control match with the Ukraine national team on 11 May,” it said in a statement.

The association said the game, whose kick-off time would be agreed later, would take place at Borussia Park in Mönchengladbach.

The UAF said the Ukraine national team “expresses its gratitude” to Borussia for the opportunity to host the game, a “critical element” in preparing the team for the 2022 World Cup playoffs.

Ukrainian football clubs decided this week to end the season that was suspended after Russia launched a bloody invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

Ukraine plans to begin its preparations for the World Cup playoffs abroad on May 2 at a training camp in Slovenia, as their country’s infrastructure is threatened by Russian bombing.

The match against Foals is only the first agreed friendly before the play-off with Scotland as Ukraine struggle to find warm-up partners in a tight international calendar.

The winners of the match at Hampden Park in Glasgow will play Wales in Cardiff on 5 June for a place in this year’s final in Qatar.
