The municipality generates about 12 tonnes of wet waste and has increased its compost production by adding more units. Within six months, the municipality will be able to process all the wet waste on its own without transporting it to Pachanadi.
CMC commissioner Rayappa said the urban local body is processing dry and wet waste generated by around 65,000 residents. “In another six months, no garbage will be sent to Pachnady. While dry waste is being recycled in the municipal area, wet waste is being converted into manure and is being used by farmers in and around Ullal. In the last six months, the municipality has collected garbage separately from households and commercial establishments. Awareness is being created to encourage people to segregate the waste at the source,” he said.
He said that the municipality does not accept mixed waste.
The municipality was converting an average of four tonnes of wet waste into organic manure per day.
On an average, four tonnes of manure is being produced every month. The city has nine educational institutions that process wet waste at the source.
Meanwhile, a private firm has started processing chicken waste to make fodder for the animals. He said that waste processing units are being opened in each ward and initiatives are being taken to clean all black spots where people dump garbage.
Mangaluru MLA UT Khadar recently launched Ullal brand organic manure. Manure is sold to farmers at Rs 10 per kg and is available in packs of 10 kg. He said that the demand for Ullal brand fertilizers is increasing tremendously.
