Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday dismissed the opposition’s allegations that the BJP was using the Uniform Civil Code issue as a tool to polarize voters ahead of elections, saying his state would soon He will implement it.

He also said that Uttarakhand will ensure that incidents like the recent case related to the alleged rape and murder of a young woman do not happen again, adding that “Dev Bhoomi” has no place for people who are like this. are involved in the offences.

Speaking at the HT Leadership Summit, he said that a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, is working expeditiously on a draft which will be ready soon.

“We will implement it soon,” he said.

He said that the implementation of the Common Code was not limited to the state elections. “After the elections we acted on what we were told,” he said.

Referring to Article 44 of the Constitution and certain observations of the Supreme Court, he said the higher judiciary is of the view that states should implement it.

Responding to a question about the alleged rape and murder of a woman working in a resort in Uttarakhand, the chief minister said it was natural that people were agitated but all the accused have been nabbed.

He said that his government will ensure that such incidents do not happen again. Dhami also rejected suggestions that the use of a bulldozer to bring down the structure resulted in the loss of valuable evidence.

He said the evidence was preserved and videographed before the structure was demolished.
