Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has been advocating for almost half a decade the benefits of alternative fuels for the environment and how cost-effective they are. The minister was requesting automakers in India to switch to or include natural gas alternatives like methanol and ethanol which are comparatively less polluting. Now going forward, Gadkari is planning to make such flex engines that can run on more than one fuel in India.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is planning to issue an order to make flex engines mandatory.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways- Nitin Gadkari said in a statement, “In the next 3 to 4 months, I will issue an order asking all automakers to switch over to electric vehicles with flex engines (which can run on more than one fuel). Giving will be mandatory.” Statement. Needless to say, once it becomes mandatory and a deadline is set, the automakers will have no other option but to follow the order as everyone did with the BS6 norms. . That said, the most significant impact would be in the imminent prices of vehicles post the deadline and some conventional petrol and diesel powertrains to be phased out if their conversion is not viable when it comes to conversion costs. We have seen similar instances of both the cases following the BS6 emission norms.

NITI Aayog had suggested an investment of ₹5,000 crore to make methanol fuel.

0 notes

Now the auto industry is not the only sector which is emphasizing on the use of alternative fuels. Methanol is also an alternative to LPG and earlier NITI Aayog has talked about promoting the use of methanol. NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat had earlier proposed an investment of around Rs 5,000 crore for the development of methanol as a fuel. In fact, the Bureau of Indian Standards certified methanol as a fuel in 2017. Government attention towards green mobility, including both electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, is very deterministic but mass adoption is still a distant dream. Meanwhile, the idea is to promote cleaner or less polluting fuels for the sake of the environment.
