Schools in Uttar Pradesh have stunned students with some strange question papers. In the ongoing annual examinations, UP Board students are being asked questions which are honestly out of the syllabus.

Have you ever thought of an antonym for ‘tree’ or the opposite of 60?

A Hindi question paper in a school in Prayagraj asked Class 5 students to write the opposite of ‘ped’ (tree), while an English question paper in Bhadohi district asked Class 7 students to write the opposite of 60.

Since this was not enough, Prayagraj Class 5 students were also asked to identify a rectangle in an English question paper. While the students found it strange to have a maths question in the English paper, the fact that there was no mark in the options in this question surprised them.

The matter has now turned into a major controversy and an inquiry has been ordered into the matter.

Director General of School Education, Anamika Singh said, “Despite Kovid and elections, we have managed to conduct the annual examination after two years. I have directed the UPBEC secretary to examine the issues related to the questions and take appropriate action on the same. “

Meanwhile, UP Junior High School Teachers’ Association office-bearer Sanjay Kanojia said, “Exams are being conducted to assess the level of understanding of the lessons by the students. But, the purpose behind the exercise has been lost.”

The responsibility of preparing the question paper for the exam is given to the Basic Education Officer (BSA), who recruits teachers in the District Institute of Education and Technology (DIET) for paper setting.

Ideally, the papers should be prepared on the model prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

More than 1.6 crore students enrolled in 1.3 lakh schools affiliated by UPBEC are appearing in these exams.

A senior education official said, “An error-free question paper can ensure proper evaluation. Even though no student can fail till class 8, these silly errors point fingers at the standard set before the students and teachers. “

He said that the question papers should be moderated to ensure accuracy.

Schools in several districts have also reported shortage of question papers apart from printing errors. A teacher from Gorakhpur said, “We got only three papers for a class of 50 students. So, we were forced to write questions on the blackboard. Printing errors are common.”

Teachers said they had no clarity on how a wrong question should be treated.

A teacher said, “We have no idea whether we should give full marks for the wrong question or it should be cancelled. Examination in government schools is just a formality as all students have to be promoted to the next class. There are instructions.”
