The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh is apparently back on its name-changing spree. A tweet by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has fueled speculation about renaming the state capital Lucknow in the coming weeks.

In a tweet welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Lucknow on Monday evening, Yogi wrote: “Welcome and greet you in Lucknow, the wind city of Sheshvatar Lord Laxman.”

Due to this, there has been a debate on social media about changing the name of Lucknow to Laxmanpuri.

A grand temple dedicated to Lakshmana is already being built in Lucknow. The demand to change the name of Lucknow to Lakhanpuri or Laxmanpuri has been made several times by BJP leaders.

Lucknow already has several sites named after Laxman and these include Laxman Tila, Laxmanpuri and Laxman Park.

The Yogi Adityanath government had changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj and Faizabad to Ayodhya in its previous tenure. This increased the demand for renaming of several districts including Sultanpur to Kushbhavanpur, Aligarh to Harigarh, Mainpuri to Mayanpuri, Sambhal to Prithviraj Nagar or Kalki Nagar, Firozabad to Chandranagar and Deoband.

Meanwhile, officials said that they are yet to know of any proposal to rename Lucknow or any other city.
