A court here Tuesday stayed the sentence awarded to AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in a case related to the 2001 protests. The special court had on January 11 sentenced Singh and five others to three months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,500 in the case registered against them for protesting frequent power cuts in the Uttar Pradesh city.

Singh appealed against the sentence in the court. The court stayed his sentence but directed him to deposit the fine.

Singh’s lawyer Rudrapratap Singh Madan said that on June 18, 2001, apart from Singh, former Samajwadi Party MLA Anoop Sanda, former corporator Kamal Srivastava and three others participated in a sit-in and blocked traffic against power cuts.

A case was registered against them at the City police station under sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code by the then sub-inspector SP Singh.

All of them were granted bail after the court pronounced its verdict on January 11.

Judge Jai Prakash Pandey has fixed February 15 as the next date of hearing and has issued notices to all the parties in the case.

The court will hear the applications of Sanda and another on Wednesday.
