UP Elections 2022 Live Updates: Voting in 59 seats today in ‘Ghar Ka Boy’ Akhilesh Yadav Vs Union Minister Karhal; Uncle Shivpal is also in the field

UP Election 2022 Live Updates: In the third phase of polling, 59 assembly seats in 16 districts of Uttar Pradesh will go to polls on Sunday. All eyes will be on the Karhal assembly seat, from where Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav is contesting, polling is to be held in the third phase on Sunday as well. BJP has fielded Union Minister SP Singh Baghel from this seat.

Campaigning for the third phase of the assembly elections ended on Friday, with senior party leaders making their last efforts to woo voters.

627 candidates are in the fray in this phase, in which over 2.15 crore people are eligible to vote. The districts where polling will be held include Hathras, Firozabad, Etah, Kasganj, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Etawah, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Hamirpur and Mahoba.

Today’s voting will also seal the fate of Samajwadi Party chief’s uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav, who is contesting from his traditional Jaswantnagar seat. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took out door-to-door marches in Kanpur, Kalpi, Jalaun and Hamirpur, while BSP chief Mayawati addressed election meetings in Jalaun and Auraiya before campaigning for the third phase ended on Friday.

Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav sought votes for his son Akhilesh Yadav in Karhal. The BJP had approached the Election Commission and demanded deployment of paramilitary forces at all booths in Karhal.

The prominent faces of this phase are Satish Mahana of BJP (Maharajpur in Kanpur) and Ramveer Upadhyay (Sadabad in Hathras) and Lewis Khurshid, who is contesting on Congress ticket from Farrukhabad Sadar. Louise Khurshid is the wife of senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid.

Former IPS officer Aseem Arun is contesting from Kannauj Sadar on a BJP ticket, while Uttar Pradesh minister Ramnaresh Agnihotri is also in the fray in this phase. In the 2017 elections, the BJP had won 49 out of 59 seats, while the SP had to be content with nine. Congress got one seat, while Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) got one seat vacant. Voting will start from 7 am on Sunday and will continue till 6 pm.
