The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday clarified that no fresh order has been issued regarding surrender or cancellation of ration cards in the state.

Refuting misleading and false reports in certain sections of the media, State Food Commissioner Sourav Babu said that ration card verification is a normal process that happens from time to time.

“Based reports are being circulated regarding surrender of ration cards and new eligibility conditions,” he said.

He further clarified that the eligibility and ineligibility criteria for domestic ration cards were ascertained through an order dated 7 October 2014 and no new changes were made since then.

Babu also said that under the government scheme, no card holder can be declared ineligible on the basis of pucca house, electricity connection, sole arms licensee, motor cycle owner and poultry/cow rearing.

Similarly, as per the National Food Security Act 2013 and other extant mandates, no provision has been prescribed for recovery from ineligible card holders and no direction has been issued from the Government level or Food Commissioner office regarding recovery.

He said that the department always issues new ration cards to the eligible card holders as per their eligibility.

A total of 29.53 lakh new ration cards have been issued by the department to the eligible beneficiaries in the state since April 1, 2020.
