According to sources in the ministry and state officials, who were present at the two meetings, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have taken the maximum number of initiatives.

Sources said some of the initiatives listed by the states are in the process of being implemented, while others are already in line with the policy.

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh in its presentation told the Ministry of Education that it is in the process of taking the help of experts from Harvard University to train its college teachers. For this purpose the state government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (Memorandum of Understanding) with the American University.

“The state also plans to set up e-content studios and incubation centers in colleges and universities. He has expressed great interest in working on improving technology in learning in higher education,” an official who attended the meeting told ThePrint on condition of anonymity.

“The colleges will also work to provide compulsory internship to graduate students in both technical and non-technical courses. This is as per the rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC).”

Haryana

Haryana government announced Free education for girls up to postgraduate level in April. It is also mentioned as one of the biggest schemes of the state for NEP implementation.

The state government in its presentation said that it will provide free education to underprivileged girls and girls belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories.

Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced in March that the state would be the first in the country to bridge the language barrier and offer undergraduate medical and engineering courses in Hindi from April.

In its presentation, the state said that it is focusing on enhancing employability of students in colleges and universities and has introduced job-oriented courses in agriculture and tourism to boost employability.

Karnataka

According to Karnataka Higher Education Minister CN Ashwath Narayan, the first step was to develop the curriculum framework. “The content was designed in accordance with the aspirations and guidelines of the NEP, and all universities implemented the learning methodology,” Narayan told ThePrint over the phone.

Karnataka was the first state implement NEP in August 2021.

The Higher Education Department is focusing on improving the governance and administrative aspects in the institutions. The state is amending its Universities Act in this regard, Narayan said, adding that the draft of the Karnataka State Universities Act 2022, which suggests comprehensive reforms in the field of higher education, was ready.

In July, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had announced that all private schools in the state would implement 25 percent quota for students from economically weaker sections under the Right to Education Act.
