UPI needs your permission before capturing location data

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has mandated that all Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based applications obtain prior authorization of customers before recording their location or geographic coordinates. In a circular, NPCI said that if the subscriber has already consented to disclose the original location while using the services, then its provisions should be offered without any refusal.

“The Apps should continue to provide UPI services even after the Customer revokes the consent to share location or geographic details for the App,” the circular said.

Whenever a customer grants permission to record his location, the permission must be appropriately communicated to UPI; Otherwise the company will take strict action. The service provider should not refuse or disable payment services if the customer disputes the consent provided, it was added.

All of the above rules must be followed by all members by December 1, 2022, and they only apply to domestic UPI transactions between individuals.
