UPSC aspirants demand extra effort in civil services exam

Hundreds of UPSC aspirants gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday to demand an extra effort to take the civil services exam, arguing that the Covid-19 pandemic affected their preparations. Student protestors are mostly those candidates who have exhausted all their efforts or are not eligible to appear in the exam due to their age. As the candidates continued to speak for their demands, the hashtag #UPSCExtraAttempt started trending on Twitter.

UPSC aspirants tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the ministry responsible for conducting the exam, the Department of Personnel and Training, to draw the attention of the government towards their demand. Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Personnel and Training was also mentioned in several tweets.

“2020 was unexpected for everyone. The crisis has left many students at a loss. Therefore, we support the demands of many UPSC aspirants to get an extra effort,” tweeted Yuva Halla Bol, a verified Twitter account that calls itself the “biggest voice” against employment in the country.

A user, who wrote “student” in his Twitter bio, questioned the “ignorance” of the central government on the issue, while PM Modi had termed Covid-19 as a “once in a century crisis”. The user said that states like Maharashtra, Odisha and Tamil Nadu have increased the age limit and number of attempts in their respective state exams.

Several others urged the central government to heed their demands, while the UPSC has remained silent on the issue.

UPSC aspirants had also approached the Supreme Court, but the apex court in its July 22 judgment refused to pass an order but gave liberty to the petitioners to seek redress from the authorities concerned. A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjiv Khanna had asked the UPSC to take a soft stand on the demand of candidates for additional effort.
