UPSC CSE: List of must-know articles from Constitution of India to a few Civil Services Exams

UPSC Mains tests the knowledge of candidates in various fields including General Knowledge, History, Polity etc. One of the most important domains for any UPSC aspirant is to know about the Indian Constitution. It scores marks in prelims and mains and a significant part of interview can be on it.

The constitution contains provisions for various subjects like rights, duties, institutions and their relations etc. along with principles. These details are contained in about 450 articles (2022), although there were originally 395 articles. While all the political concepts enshrined in the constitution should be clearly understood, there is no need to memorize too many articles.

Since Indian politics is considered to be a major subject, candidates must have a fair idea about the nature and salient features of the Indian Constitution, such as fundamental rights, federalism, judicial review and activism, separation of powers, among others.

List of Articles in the Indian Constitution

Here is a list of essential articles in the Constitution of India that UPSC aspirants must know before appearing for the exam:

Article 1 is about India-India, there will be a union of states.

Article 3 covers the process of giving effect to five types of changes: how a state or union territory is created or abolished; Change their boundaries, areas and names.

With respect to fundamental rights, Article 14 for equality, Article 19 for liberty, Article 21 on life and personal liberty, Article 25 and Article 32 for the right to worship, where every person has the right to seek constitutional remedies from the Supreme Court. of rights, when FRs are violated.

Article 51A will be necessary under the Fundamental Duties.

Articles 54 and 55 may become topical due to the recent presidential election in 2022.

Article 72, President’s mercy is necessary because of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the mercy powers of the Governor.

Article 161 deals with the power of the Governor to grant pardons, etc. and in certain cases to suspend, remove or reduce the sentence. (Perarivalan case 2022 makes Article 72 and 161 important)

Article 280 is important, it pertains to the Finance Commission.

Apart from articles, there are some sections needed to know section 124A of IPC related to sedition. Also, Section 9A is important as it throws light on Hemant Soren and the possibility of disqualification due to the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Apart from this, students should also stay updated about the ones that are trending or in news so that they can apply these articles to the current events. As of now the exam, both prelims and mains is not article focused, it is concept focused. Hence, it is unnecessary to memorize so many articles, however, the concepts need to be very clear.
