UPSC Civil Services Exam is considered to be one of the toughest exams in India. Every year lakhs of candidates appear in this exam but only a few are successful in it. Most aspirants go to coaching institutes to prepare for UPSC but Satyam Gandhi, who secured AIR 10 in his first attempt, mostly depended on self-study. Satyam, who hails from Samastipur district of Bihar, started preparing for the Civil Services Examination on his own in the final year of his graduation and his decision worked well for him.

Satyam completed his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya and graduated in BA (Hons) in Political Science from Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi. Satyam said that his grandfather wanted someone in the family to become an IAS officer and he made up his mind to fulfill that dream.

Satyam shifted to Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar, which is known as the hub of civil services aspirants. While there are countless coaching institutes in Rajinder Nagar, Satyam just wanted a conducive environment for his studies.

preparation strategy

Satyam started preparing for UPSC in 2019 and used to study for 12-13 hours a day. The Samastipur native made prelims his priority, and focused the most on general studies. Apart from books, his self-made notes also helped in cracking the exam. Satyam also realized his weaknesses through 120 mock tests. He took the help of online coaching platforms that provided guidance to clear the interview round.

important topic

Satyam said that economics, politics and history are the most important subjects while preparing for the preliminary exam. Aspirants preparing for prelims should focus more on these topics along with current affairs. He had chosen Political Science as an optional subject.
