Voting for the urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu’s western districts began on a brisk Saturday and went largely without incident. Safety measures like distribution of gloves and sanitizers were in place at almost all polling stations.

Sources in Coimbatore Corporation said that Coimbatore Corporation observed that 6.79% voters cast their vote till 9 am. Polling began peacefully at 7 am without voting machines or any law and order issues.

Tiruppur

In Tiruppur district, while some polling stations, such as Panchayat Union Middle School, Palladam West, on NGR Road in Palladam Municipality, witnessed brisk polling from 7 am onwards, voters in other polling stations such as Corporation Middle School in Tennampalayam of Tiruppur Corporation Voter turnout was low.

Information and Publicity Minister MP Saminathan cast his vote at a polling station located at Panchayat Union Middle School in Muthur Nagar Panchayat.

Polling was delayed by about 30 minutes due to a fault in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at a booth at Municipal Middle School Parapalayam in ward number 42 of Tiruppur Corporation. The polling personnel replaced it with reserve EVMs and polling began around 7.30 am, officials said.

In the Nilgiris, around 8% of the votes were cast till 9 am, around 9.17% in wards of municipalities and 6.50% in nagar panchayats.

Heavy polling was witnessed in Salem as voters thronged the polling stations in large numbers and long queues were seen outside the booths. Polling began at 1,219 polling stations in Erode. Thermal scanning of voters was done at the polling stations who came wearing face masks.

Dharmapuri

Voting began vigorously on Saturday for 10 Nagar Panchayats and Dharmapuri Municipality in Dharmapuri. Voters, especially in Nagar Panchayats, thronged the polling stations early in the day to cast their votes. Voting is underway for six nagar panchayats, Krishnagiri Municipality and Hosur Nigam. Voting was faster in semi-urban nagar panchayats as compared to municipalities and corporations.
