US Animal Shelter receives unexpected ‘Christmas gift’ of 800 parrots: ‘They couldn’t be taken away’

An American animal shelter was “in shock” after receiving more than 800 parrots during the holiday weekend, distributed in two batches by their owner’s son, who locked them all in one room. The Detroit animal welfare group, based in the northern state of Michigan, posted on Facebook about the “Christmas presents we weren’t expecting” — adding that “the birds came from a very unhealthy situation.” It said the first group of 497 birds were released on 23 December – seven reconciled in cages. The owner’s son then returned with an additional 339 on Sunday.

“The owner’s irresponsibility is angered,” the group wrote on Facebook, adding that the birds “were strangling each other and needed immediate help.”

“We were in shock,” it said, “but couldn’t take them away.” Working with other local organizations, the group was able to find temporary housing for the parrots.

“It really takes a village to help these animals,” it said.

Kelly LeBonti, director of the rescue group, told local newspaper the Detroit Free Press that the birds were “under great stress.”

“They were barely walking. We had to take them out and put them in separate cages.”

The son told Lebonti that he believed his father had planned to raise only a few birds, but it went out of hand, and he is now spending $1,200 a month to feed them all. Had been. Some apparently injured or malnourished parrots in the photos posted by the group will be available for adoption after being evaluated by a vet.

The Detroit Animal Welfare Group cautions that “owning a parrot is a 6-15 year commitment.”

“They require not only food, water, and daily cage cleaning, but daily interaction, enrichment, and flight time.”

In Michigan, owners can be prosecuted for not taking adequate care of their animals.

Lebonti said the group did not contact authorities, noting that he was glad the family had “stepped in the right direction” by reaching out for help.
