US President Biden to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral

US President Joe Biden will attend the funeral of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday at the age of 96.

“I don’t know what the details are yet, but I’m going,” Biden told CNN.

Biden said, “We mourn for all of you. She was a great woman, I am so happy to have met her.”

The US President and First Lady went on to say that Queen Elizabeth II has always led by grace, an unwavering commitment to duty, and the incomparable strength of her example, supported by her beloved Prince Philip for 73 years.

Biden called Elizabeth II “a statesman of unmatched dignity and constancy” who deepened the base alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States.

He said the queen helped make the relationship between the countries special.

“We first met the Queen in 1982, traveling to the UK as part of a Senate delegation. And we were honored to have her for us during our first overseas visit as President and First Lady in June 2021. Extended her hospitality, where she charmed us. Her wisdom, inspired us with her kindness, and generously shared her wisdom with us. All told, she met 14 US presidents,” he wrote.

“She helped Americans celebrate both the anniversary of the founding of Jamestown and the bicentenary of our independence. And she stood in solidarity with the United States during our darkest days after 9/11, when she poignantly reminded us that “the price of suffering we pay for love,” the statement further added.

Born on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London, Queen Elizabeth II was Britain’s longest-serving monarch. She was the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York – who would later become King George VI – and Queen Elizabeth.

On Thursday, King Charles III assumed the throne shortly after the death of Elizabeth II. He described the loss of his mother as “the biggest sad moment for me and all my family members”.

According to media reports, a 96-round royal gun salute to mark each year of her long life took place in London, Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on her passing.
