Uttam Singh to captain Indian hockey team in Junior Asia Cup in Oman

Young forward Uttam Singh, who helped India regain the Sultan of Johor Cup last year, was on Thursday retained as captain for the upcoming Junior Asia Cup to be held in Salalah, Oman from May 23 to June 1.

It will be a qualifying event for the FIH Junior Men’s World Cup to be held in Malaysia in December.

India is placed in Pool A along with Pakistan, Japan, Thailand and Chinese Taipei while Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan are placed in Pool B.

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh’s Karampur village, the quick and agile Uttam struck twice in a shootout that included a sudden-death encounter as Australia cruised to a 5-4 win over Australia in the Sultan of Johor Cup in November last year.

Vishnukant Singh and Sudeep Chirmako, who scored for India in the final, also retained their places in the 18-member squad.

Uttam also featured in India’s World Cup 2021 campaign in Bhubaneswar, where they made it to the semi-finals after losing to eventual runners-up Germany.

Bobby Singh Dhami was named Uttam’s vice-captain, while Mohit HS and Himwan Sihag were chosen as the goalkeepers.

The midfield will see veteran Vishnukant Singh who had a stellar performance during the recently held FIH Hockey Pro League in Rourkela.

He will be joined by Rajinder Singh, Poovanna CB, Amandeep and Sunit Lakra, while Bobby, Arjit Singh Hundal, Aditya Lalge, Uttam, Sudeep Chirmako and Angad Bir Singh were placed in the forward line.

Coach CR Kumar said, “We have a very experienced team and some players have made their senior debut in recent tournaments.”

“We have gone through two preparation and two competition cycles which have helped the players get the right amount of exposure.

“With the senior team also being out of the same camp here at SAI, Bengaluru, we were able to get enough experience playing matches against them. The team is upbeat and we want to be on top,” said Kumar.
