Prayagraj: In a unique initiative, more than 600 prisoners of the country Kaushambi District Jail have started reading Gayatri Mantra And Mahamrityunjay Japi And made it a part of his daily routine. Prisoners have started the practice to control their anger and keep away negative emotions like jealousy, greed as well as promote longevity.
Kaushambi District Jail Superintendent Rakesh Singh “After the morning count, 650 out of 850 inmates gather on the ground inside the jail and take part in the chanting of Gayatri Mantra and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for five to 10 minutes,” he told TOI.
He said that this chanting was started on 6th April and initially there were not many prisoners but gradually the number increased and now 650 prisoners regularly participate in the mantra chanting.
It is believed that chanting calms the mind and soul, releases positive energy and curbs Negative thoughts, Even some scientific studies have found that chanting reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, in addition to increasing self-awareness and compassion.
Prison staff said the inmates who started the exercise initially said they calmed their minds, overcame fear and reduced their stress levels by chanting the two mantras.
He said that these mantras are said to bestow longevity, ward off misfortune and misfortune and prevent untimely death.
“The prisoners started showing interest in other meditation practices as well and now recite bhajans in the morning or evening,” Singh said.
Jail officials also claimed that they have noticed a clear change in the behavior of prisoners who started meditating and chanting Gayatri and Mahamrityunjaya mantras in the past fortnight.
Most of the prisoners, especially the convicts, claimed that meditation and chanting developed patience and reduced mental stress.
“When these prisoners are released from jail after completing their sentence, they will be expected to indulge in good activities and not resort to crime again,” a jail official said.
He said that the exercise was started after some prisoners showed interest especially about the benefits of Gayatri and Mahamrityunjaya mantras.
The jail authorities have also formed a special team which organizes bhajan recitation and other religious activities in the jail premises.
