Uttarakhand to introduce Bhagavad Gita, Vedas in school curriculum

The state government of Uttarakhand has announced that it will include Bhagavad Gita, Vedas and Upanishads in the school curriculum. Uttarakhand Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat while stating the implementation of religious texts in the syllabus for the upcoming academic year said that the students will be taught about the history and geography of the state.

The National Policy on Education (NEP) asks schools to design curriculum based on Indian history and traditions. Following this, Uttarakhand is now considering to include Gita, Vedas and Upanishads in the school curriculum.

“We are going to implement NEP in the upcoming session this year, Uttarakhand will be the first state to implement it. We will cover Vedas, Geeta, Ramayana and the history of Uttarakhand in the syllabus,” Rawat told ANI.

He further said that these changes would be made in consultation with the academicians and the general public. He said that inclusion will not be done without taking public opinion into consideration.

Under the theme “Indian Knowledge System”, the NEP states that all pedagogy and curriculum, starting from the foundational stage, will be reorganized and redesigned to be firmly rooted in Indian culture and the local context and ethos.

Rawat made this announcement on Sunday at the Doon University on the occasion of the inauguration of the examination festival organized by the State Commission for Child Rights. According to Rawat, the proposal to include Gita and Vedas in the syllabus will be discussed on Monday, May 2.

The NEP allows state governments to select about 30 to 40 percent of the curriculum taught in schools in their area. This has allowed not only Uttarakhand but many other states to offer subjects of their choice. Currently, the Bhagavad Gita is a part of the curriculum in schools in the states of Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.
