Vice President urges states to implement NEP 2020

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday appealed to all the states to implement the National Education Policy 2020 with missionary zeal to bring about a change in the teaching-learning ecosystem. He also said that the NEP is a visionary document that aims to usher in much needed reforms in the education sector to meet the demands of the 21st century.

Naidu, who is on a two-day visit to Sikkim, said that NEP 2020 lays special emphasis on vocational, pre-primary and primary education, improving the quality of teaching, creative use of technology and flexibility and excellence in higher studies. He laid the foundation stone of Kangchenjunga State University in Tarku, South Sikkim from Samman Bhawan in the state capital.

Naidu lauded the Sikkim government for its efforts in implementing the NEP and setting up a State Education Reform Commission headed by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. He lauded the Himalayan state for achieving the highest Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of 75.8 per cent in higher studies as per the data provided by the All India Survey of Higher Education.

Establishing Kangchenjunga State University is another step towards implementation of NEP, he said, adding that it will provide quality education and skills to the students to find employment. Naidu expressed hope that Sikkim would soon become a “learning center” in the Northeast region.

The Vice President also interacted with a group of students from Sikkim, who were recently evacuated from war-torn Ukraine. He expressed happiness that the students trapped in the conflict zone could reach Sikkim safely with active coordination between the Central and State Governments. The students shared their experiences in war-torn Ukraine with Naidu, Governor Ganga Prasad, Chief Minister and other dignitaries at the Raj Bhavan.

The Vice President was also apprised of the various difficulties that students in Ukraine had to face after Russia’s attack on the Eastern European country. He took keen interest in the well being of the students and inquired about their academic issues. Earlier in the day, Naidu arrived here and was received by other dignitaries, including the Governor and the Chief Minister, at the Libing Helipad.
