Five people, including a man known as ‘Ramayani Chaiwala’, filed their nominations on Tuesday, the first day of the nomination process for the Vice Presidential election to be held on August 6. The nomination papers of a candidate were rejected for failing to produce the mandatory documents.

July 19 is the last date for filing nominations. As per the details available with the Returning Officer’s office, K Padmarajan from Salem district in Tamil Nadu, Pareshkumar Nanubhai Mulani from Ahmedabad, Hosamath Vijayananda from Bengaluru and Naidugari Rajasekhara Srimukhalingam from Andhra Pradesh have filed their nominations for the Vice Presidential election.

Anand Singh Kushwaha of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, better known as “Ramayani Chaiwala”, was among those who filed nomination papers at the Returning Officer’s office in Parliament. Though Kushwaha’s papers were accepted, he did not deposit the security deposit of Rs 15,000. Srimukhalingam’s papers were rejected as he failed to produce attested copy of the entry relating to the candidate in the electoral roll of the Lok Sabha constituency in which he is residing.

Four more nominations will come up for scrutiny on July 20. These nominations are set to be rejected as they were not supported by 20 MPs as proposers and 20 others as supporters. For a successful nomination as a candidate in the Vice Presidential election, a nominee needs 20 MPs as proposers and 20 other MPs as supporters.

The term of outgoing M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10 and the next vice-president will take oath on August 11. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a clear lead in the election, with members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated members, eligible to vote.

Political parties have not yet declared the names of their candidates for the elections. The Vice President is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

In the election of the Vice President, the electoral college consists of a total of 788 members from both the houses of the Parliament. An elector can subscribe to only one nomination paper of a candidate as either a proposer or a supporter.

A candidate can file a maximum of four nomination papers. The security deposit for the election is Rs 15,000. Unlike presidential elections, where voting takes place at multiple locations as elected legislators, not even nominated members, are part of the electoral college in a vice-presidential election, voting takes place in the Parliament House.
