Video: House collapses in river amid heavy rain in Kerala

The house was empty at the time of the incident.

Thiruvananthapuram:

A house was washed away in Kerala’s Kottayam district after heavy rains created a flood-like situation and landslides killed at least 21 people across the state.

The scene through the eyes of passers-by showed that the house was washed away. In dramatic scenes, a two-story house standing on the banks of a river is seen slowly bowing before the structure suddenly plunges into the muddy waters.

The house was empty at the time of the incident. Some people are seen standing on a road near the house and stepping to safety as the structure collapsed.

Kerala received incessant rains throughout the night, but the intensity had reduced by morning over most parts of the state. Landslides have been reported in two districts – Kottayam and Idukki. 12 people are reported missing in Kottayam.

Apart from the National Disaster Response Force, the Army, Navy and Air Force have also stepped in to assist in the rescue operation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday discussed the rain situation with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and said officials were working at the ground level to help the injured and the affected.
